Is the context of time the untapped issue in social media development?

What is the next force that will drive development and user expectations for web services?

The prevailing opinion I have heard is that it’s about context-based personalization.

  • Yeah, I am pretty dumbstruck by how much time some people ("not busy people", if you ask me) spend on delineating/managing their online SN's. Talk about "not scalable":

    On the one hand, SN's are great for "lowering interaction costs" and all that, but it seems like (in the status quo) they're just a more compelling form of entertainment than TV...

    It would be a real shame if the aggregate time wasted watching TV just shifted to being wasted thinking about whether Jane should "poke" Sally or just go ahead and request "friend" status...

  • A shame maybe, but if people just want to use SN's for entertainment, then so be it.

    I'm actually not surprised. SN's are our display of our "unique" selves.

    In any case I'm not going to take the task to change people's behaviour, but I'll provide them the tools and the "beacon" to show what they could be getting if they changed. If they don't change, then I'm not solving their pain points.
