What is the next force that will drive development and user expectations for web services?

On the one hand, SN's are great for "lowering interaction costs" and all that, but it seems like (in the status quo) they're just a more compelling form of entertainment than TV...

It would be a real shame if the aggregate time wasted watching TV just shifted to being wasted thinking about whether Jane should "poke" Sally or just go ahead and request "friend" status...

In any case I'm not going to take the task to change people's behaviour, but I'll provide them the tools and the "beacon" to show what they could be getting if they changed. If they don't change, then I'm not solving their pain points.
