SN's are our display of our "unique" selves.

http://www.thenewatlantis.com/publications/virt...

Shirky links are spot on, btw.

In any case I'm not going to take the task to change people's behaviour, but I'll provide them the tools and the "beacon" to show what they could be getting if they changed. If they don't change, then I'm not solving their pain points.

Re: Is the context of time the untapped issue in social media development?

Yeah, I am pretty dumbstruck by how much time some people ("not busy people", if you ask me) spend on delineating/managing their online SN's. Talk about "not scalable":

http://shirky.com/writings/community_scale.html

On the one hand, SN's are great for "lowering interaction costs" and all that, but it seems like (in the status quo) they're just a more compelling form of entertainment than TV...

http://www.shirky.com/herecomeseverybody/2008/0...

It would be a real shame if the aggregate time wasted watching TV just shifted to being wasted thinking about whether Jane should "poke" Sally or just go ahead and request "friend" status...

(lol, I'm guilty ;-)
